Chesaning gridders fall in see-saw battle with Panthers

CHESANING – The Indians' offense put points on the board Thursday night, but the defense couldn't get the big stops when needed in a 35-26 loss to visiting Alma.

“Our defense got them (Alma) into several third-and-long situations and we just couldn't stop 'em,” assessed Chesaning coach Steve Tithof. “We didn't turn the ball over tonight, but we gave up the big plays. To Alma's credit, they came up with the big plays when they needed to.”

Alma opened the scoring with a 15 yard TD run in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The Tribe came back at 6:21 of the second quarter on a 44 yard run by Deshaun Young. With the missed PAT, the Indians trailed 7-6.

Then just before the half, the Panthers extended their lead to 14-6.

The see-saw battle continued in the third quarter. Young struck again at 9:09 on a two-year run. The Tribe went for two and failed. That left them trailing 14-12.

Alma extended the lead to 21-12 in the third. The Panthers then added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 28-12.

Young found an answer, scampering 53 yards for his third touchdown of the night. Sophomore quarterback Alex Devota connected with A.J. Nietling for the two-point conversion.

Alma scored next to make it 35-20. That's the way it remained until the final second of the game when Devota connected with Nietling again, this time on a 17 yard TD strike. The two-point attempt failed.

The Chesaning offense picked up 299 yards rushing and another 97 passing for 396 yards of total offense.

Devota was 8 of 16 for 97 yards and a score behind center.

Young ran wild, picking up 261 yards and three touchdowns in 22 carries. Nietling had 27 yards in seven carries, and three receptions for 44 yards and a score.

On defense, Jordan Casassa led with 13 tackles. Young had eight tackles and an interception. Rod Cantu hauled down 12 tackles and Jose Mireles came up with 11 take-downs.

This Friday Bullock Creek comes to town to continue the Tri-Valley Conference Central Division schedule. Like the Indians, the Lancers are looking for their first win of the season. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. at Orra C. Morningstar Stadium.
