Hornets hold off Spartan surge, win 64-58

WEBBERVILLE – Host Webberville used a fourth quarter surge to cut into the margin Friday night, but New Lothrop’s varsity cagers were able to hold on for a 64-58 win.

“We were up by 13 going into the fourth quarter, and got it up to 15, but Webberville just kept hitting some key shots, some threes,” said New Lothrop coach Jeremy Fisher. “We held them off at the end and were able to get the win.”

New Lothrop led 20-17 after the first quarter, then out-gunned the Spartans 11-4 in the second for a comfortable 31-21 lead at the break. The Hornets extended that with a 16-13 run in the third. Webberville closed out with a 24-17 advantage in the fourth, but couldn’t erase the deficit.

The Hornets finished the night hitting 19 twos and six threes, and going 6 of 18 from the free throw line.

Leo Harris led the Hornets with 14 points, seven rebounds and four charges taken. Joe Jamick had 12 points and seven boards. Michael Mucha added nine points. Jameson Toma and Austin Newman had six points each. Nolan Wendling had five points, but passed out four assists. Aaron Beach also had five points.

The Hornet defense took seven charges on the night.

“Our defense really did a good job taking charges when they were there,” Fisher said. The Spartans were led by Esteban Rubio with 19 points and Dylan Zimmerman with 13 points.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 14-2 in the Genesee Area Conference Blue Division, 14-3 overall. They travel to Atherton on Tuesday, and to International Academy of Flint on Thursday.
