“Authentic Commitment”

Chalk Talk
By John Strycker
Superintendent New Lothrop Area Schools

“There is a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.” – Anonymous

Has anyone in the New Lothrop school community ever watched our Athletic Director Craig Atkins pace the sideline during a football game, or sit on the edge of his seat during a girl’s volleyball game? What about Elementary Principal David Harnish’s vehicle parked faithfully outside the elementary school from 6:00 a.m. to well past 6:00 p.m. most weekdays and many Saturdays? …and how is Mr. Berthiaume attending so many nightly events while running a first class high school? Then there is our Technology Director, Rich O’Connor at most every home event helping to ensure that things run smoothly. With such action, the word commitment comes to mind.

This coming month is Administrator Appreciation month. It is a time for our school community to recognize those who lead our school district and a reason to honor those who hold the greatest leadership responsibility of all…the care and education of our young people. When I consider our school administrators, I reflect on others I have worked with that are merely “doing their job,” as compared to those whom are committed to their work. I also consider my own personal life: For example, I am “interested” in golf. When I have a chance to go out and golf with some friends or family, I do so and enjoy it very much. However, golfing is not a necessary part of my recreation and could give or take the activity based upon the circumstance. However, when it comes to my running, I am committed to the activity. I will run most every morning no matter how much sleep I received the night before, or even if I don’t feel well. I will run no matter the place I am or the weather conditions outside. Just two weeks ago, I was headed out for a run in 30 degree rain/snow conditions. My wife said, “You are certainly committed.” I smiled, put my hat on and headed out.

Our students are fortunate to have such individuals as Craig Atkins, David Harnish, Anthony Berthiaume and Rich O’Connor as their school leaders. These men “make no excuses and only accept results,” when it comes to the job of educating our children. This type of leadership is also consistent to the culture of our school community. This is evident in the only high school gym I am aware of that post only banners that illustrate, “State Championships.” Not runner up, not conference, district or regional, but “State Championships.” Thank you gentlemen for what you do each and every day and your commitment to our students. Thank you to our school community for modeling such standards in which our children will ultimately imitate.

Please call or visit us at school and visit our website if you have any questions or concerns.

Take Care,

John
