Tribe diamondgals open the season with sweep of visiting Mt. Morris

CHESANING – The Lady Indian varsity softball team opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mt. Morris on Thursday.

The Tribe gals spotted their visitors three first inning runs, but battled back for a 6-3 victory. The Indians scored one in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and two in the six.

Haley Dankert went the distance, giving up three runs off six hits and fanning four.

Rachel Toma led the Chesaning offense with two runs and a RBI off four hits. Dankert helped her cause with three hits, a walk and a RBI. Emille Robart added two hits with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Sam Stryker also had two hits with a walk, a run scored and two RBI.

In the nightcap, the Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Indians unlimbered the bats. Chesaning won the contest 13-7 in four innings.

Haley Giltrop got the win for the Tribe, yielding seven runs off two hits with seven strike-outs and six walks.

Roma again led the way with three hits, two runs and a RBI. Dankert had two hits, two runs and a RBI. Alex Kunik had two hits, a run and two RBI. Giltrop had a hit, a walk, two runs and three RBI. Katie Eurich chipped in two hits with a double, a walk, a run and three RBI.

“You could definitely tell that it was the first couple games of the season,” assessed Chesaning’s new skipper, Ron Poyer. “We had two very bad first innings, but I’m very proud of the girls and how they never gave up and fought back for two wins. We have a lot to work on yet, but I’m very excited and optimistic about the upcoming season.”

The Lady Indians travel to Nouvel Catholic Central on Tuesday, then host Carrollton on Thursday.
