ELWYN S. JOHNSON of Montrose

Age 95, died August 17, 2015. He was born September 17, 1919 in Barryton, to Sherman and Maude Johnson. He was the middle child in a family of five sons and three daughters. On October 18, 1941 he married the love of his life, Elaine Benroth, at the North Baptist Church in Flint. Elwyn and Elaine celebrated 73 years of marriage. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the 9th Armored Division in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. Elwyn and Elaine lived in the same home in Montrose for 68 years. He lost Elaine in 2014. He retired from General Motors in 1976 after 30 years of service. Elwyn’s community service included working with the Montrose summer recreation program, the Athletic Boosters and the Blueberry Festival. As an avid Montrose football fan he worked the chains or a gate at Montrose High School football games for more than 50 years. He was a past master of Masonic Lodge #428 in Montrose and president of the Temple Association for more than 25 years. He enjoyed deer hunting, golf and bowling.

He is survived by their three children, Gary (Sandy) Johnson, of Flushing, Gayle (Terry) Tekiele, of Fremont, Ohio, and Carol Murdock, of Interlochen. He was the world’s best grandfather to eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Delores Cooper, of New Lothrop; sister-in-law, Maxine Johnson, of New Lothrop; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Emmet (Minnie), Ferris (Jessie), Howard, Sherman, Jr. (Ilo); two sisters, Emmabelle and Vervaine; brother-in-law, Philip Cooper; and son-in-law, Jerald Murdock.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2015 at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Montrose. Rev. Susan Bennett Stiles officiated, with burial in Montrose Township Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Montrose Veteran’s Bell Memorial project.
