Ten from area place at state individual wrestling finals

AUBURN HILLS – Ten wrestlers from the Tri-County Citizen coverage area placed at the individual state wrestling finals held last weekend, March 2-4, at the Palace of Auburn Hills. In Division 3, Chesaning had a trio of wrestlers place third, while Montrose had two earn places. New Lothrop finished with four state placers in Division 4, with St. Charles finishing with one.

DIVISION 3 At 103 lbs., Chesaning freshman Jordan Rodriguez took third with a 3-2 decision over Frankie Najera of Adrian Madison in the consolation finals. At 160 lbs., Tribe senior Trevor Patterson was third with an 11-5 decision over Owen Guilford of Portland in the consolation finals.

Chesaning senior Hunter Gasper took third at 171 lbs., posting a 3-1 decision over Paul Streeter of Sanford Meridian in their consolation finals bout.

For Montrose, junior Reese Wallis finished fourth at 125 lbs. He lost a 4-3 decision on the first tiebreaker in the consolation finals.

Senior Richie Wallis finished seventh, posting a 6-4 decision over Garrett Gelinski of Croswell-Lexington in their match.

DIVISION 4 Senior Erik Birchmeier led the Hornets, finishing second at 189 lbs. after a 5-3 loss to Tylor Grimes of Hudson in the championship bout. At 135 lbs., sophomore Austin Wolford

finished fourth, losing a 1-0 decision to Noah Teague of Springport in the consolation finals.

At 119 lbs., junior Tommy Malloy finished fifth for the Hornets, posting 7-1 decision over Daryn Shepler of Carsonville-Port Sanilac in their bout.

Freshman Justin Carnahan also placed fifth at 140 lbs., pinning Carson Scroggie of Sandusky in 3:47 of their match.

For St. Charles, junior Hunter Sweatland took third at 160 lbs., pinning Joe Rigling of Leroy Pine River in 3:50 of their consolation finals bout.
