Bulldogs capture D-3 district diamond crown

Courtesy Photo HEMLOCK – The St. Charles varsity diamondmen powered their way to the Division 3 district title at Hemlock on Saturday, June 2.

The Bulldogs edged out St. Louis 3-1 in the semifinal game, then slugged Chesaning 11-1 in the finals.

In the semifinals, St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Blake Berent doubled. With two outs, Devin Barron singled, and Berent scored the first run.

In the sixth inning. Berent singled. Kaleb Himler bunted him to second. Collin Brabant singled to get on base. With two outs, Cody Kostick got a hit, scoring Berent. Michael Menzel singled to drive in the third run.

St. Charles finished the game with three runs off 12 hits with one error. St. Louis had one run off four hits and one error.

Berent led the St. Charles hit parade with three hits, including a double. Hammond aided his cause with a pair of hits. Kostick also had two hits.

Menzel, Austin Kelly, Himler, Brabant and Barron each had a hit.

Austin Hammond got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs. He went six and one-third innings, giving up four hits and one run while striking out four. Blake Berent got the final two outs in relief.

In the finals, Chesaning scored its lone run in the first inning. St. Charles scored five in the second, three in the fourth and three in the fifth. The Bulldogs had eight hits to Chesaning’s one.

Hammond led the ‘Dawg hitters with two doubles and three RBI. Menzel also had two hits with a RBI. Michael Pratt, Himler, Barraon, and Kostick each had a hit, with Kostick adding a RBI.

Berent went the distance on the mound for St. Charles. He allowed one run off one hit and no walks while striking out four in five innings of work.

The Bulldogs were slated to travel to Millington for the Division 3 regionals. They were to face Vassar in the noon game. New Lothrop and Laingsburg were squaring off in the other semifinal contest. The regional champion was scheduled to advance to quarterfinals at Saginaw Valley State University on Tuesday, June 12 at 3 p.m. against the Brown City regional champion.
